Obviously, the fictional Joe still can’t hold a candle to the real man we all knew and loved. In the story, the fictional Joe will demonstrate not only the real Joe’s personality, but also his strength of godly character through the greatest adversity.

This is why I have developed a main character in my new series after his legacy. And he still inspires others to personify that same joy. And he left this world a better place for those that knew him. His tagline, “Leave it better than you found it” wasn’t just something he said. He touched so many lives with his infectious positivity. He was a high school football coach and a great mentor to his players. He loved Jesus, he loved his family, and he loved others. Whether it was time, money, service, or encouragement, he was willing to offer whatever he could to whomever needed it. If someone needed something, he’d give it. If something needed to be done, Joe would do it.

Joe didn’t know how to whine or complain. It’s funny how I always remember Joe singing that song because his personality, character, and life as a whole was truly, Betcha By Golly, WOW. In all of the years I’ve known him, I never heard anyone say anything negative about his character. He really did have a knack for lifting moods everywhere he went. You couldn’t stay down with Joe in the room. I have fond memories of Joe singing, “Betcha By Golly Wow” in his best high-pitched Aaron Neville voice. And when it comes to Joe’s life, there is much to celebrate. My sister was cheated from having support from family and friends, and those family and friends were cheated from having any closure by attending a celebration of life service. Only my sister and her children, Joe’s parents, and Joe’s siblings were allowed to attend. My brother-in-law Joe passed away in April of last year in the middle of the pandemic. That was a great Christmas memory for him and my husband. If my memory serves me correctly, they attended the game the day before Christmas Eve. Saints game in the New Orleans Superdome. For Christmas one year, my husband surprised him with tickets to the Rams vs. My brother-in-law Joe loved Aaron Neville. Aaron Neville did a nice cover of it as well. I have always loved the song “Betcha By Golly Wow” by The Stylistics.

These voices are crisp and full of fun, even if most of the characters share Isaac's confessed inability to tell the difference between ""meaningful conversation and talking shit."" Underneath all the jive (e.g., ""I'm divorced by force, think love is from above, like my books long and my brewskis in a short glass""), there's a sweet core of sentimentality that will no doubt strike a chord with many readers who have hoped for a second chance at love. The inspiration for a main character in my new series As Isaac and Bebe try to make their love work, they suffer through several comically horrific dates, as well as Dashay's attempts to thwart their developing romance, all of which Joe relates in the alternating voices of the three principals and Bebe's best friend, Sandy (who faces love and career troubles of her own). But there is a jealous woman in his life-Isaac's 13-year-old daughter, Dashay, an aspiring rap artist who isn't looking for a new mom. Isaac is single in one sense-his wife left him several years ago. While attending graduation ceremonies at a local college, fireman Isaac Sizemore spies mature Bebe triumphantly accepting her diploma, taps her on the shoulder and makes a date. Joe follows the commercial success of He Say, She Say with an exuberant if unambitious tale of love discovered in the nick of time by two lonely, 40-something African Americans living in Chicago.
